Acetaldehyde is an important precursor as an intermediate in chemical synthesis. Acetaldehyde is produced by catalytic oxidation from ethylene, and is a flammable, clear, colorless liquid with a pungent odor. It is used as a raw material for ethyl acetate, pyridines, pentaerythritol, chloral, lactic acid, peracetic acid, acetic acid, 1,3-butylene glycol and crotonaldehyde. It is also used as an intermediate for dyes, pharmaceuticals, perfumes and pesticides.
