ASTM International Standard Test Method for Measurement of Extreme-Pressure Properties of Lubricating Fluids (Four-Ball Method) ASTM D2783-03

Description
1.1 This test method covers the determination of the load-carrying properties of lubricating fluids. The following two determinations are made: 1.1.1 Load-wear index (formerly Mean-Hertz load). 1.1.2 Weld point by means of the four-ball extreme-pressure (EP) tester. 1.2 For the determination of the load-carrying properties of lubricating greases, see Test Method D 2596. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard.
