GD&T Comprehensive Fundamentals is an intense immersion into the rules, symbols, and other concepts of ASME Y14.5-2018, the current American standard for Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing. The course explains key rules and all control symbols and modifiers; shows how to use basic dimensions, how to calculate virtual conditions, and how to select, identify, and reference datums correctly; demonstrates the distinction between two single-segment and composite tolerancing; and highlights significant differences between the ASME and ISO GD&T standards.
Several short exercises and lots of examples help trainees learn about this unique design language and how to use it to save money and improve quality. There is some homework–but not too much! To apply the concepts, participants should bring engineering drawings to the class, or send us drawings ahead of time so that we can incorporate them as teaching examples throughout the class.
Participants should have some familiarity with engineering drawings, but it’s not mandatory that they have any previous GD&T experience. Also, many participants looking for an advanced class discover that the fast pace and in-depth coverage challenge their current GD&T skills. Participants should come prepared to work hard and learn a lot, even if it’s not their first GD&T class. All our GD&T instructors are degreed engineers, have achieved Sr. Level Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Professionals (GDTP) certification by ASME, and have years of experience teaching and consulting on GD&T.
By participating in this course, you will learn how to successfully:
Describe the tolerance zones defined by each symbol.
Determine when to use Rule #1 to control form and when other controls are appropriate.
Recognize correct syntax for feature control frames.
Relate common gauging and inspection methods to geometric tolerance zones defined by feature control frames.
Correctly apply and interpret the Maximum Material Condition (MMC), Least Material Condition (LMC), and other modifiers.
Assess various datums and datum schemes against product functionality and manufacturing and inspection performance.
Recognize the need for product-specific GD&T guidelines and list the steps required to create them.
