The Dove Prism is a form invented by H.W. Dove. It resembles half of a common right angle prism in which a ray entering parallel to the hypotenuse face is reflected internally at that face and emerges parallel to its incident direction. If the prism is rotated about the optical axis, the image is rotated through twice that angle. A Dove Prism must be used in parallel light.
The Dove prism may also be used as a retroreflector. For this application it performs as the right-angle prism that is used in 180° deflection.
