General Information The Sm (Smith) is an autoantigen on a series of particles composed of RNA and protein. Unlike RNP, the Sm antigen is resistant to RNase, but partially sensitive to trypsin. It is also involved in the pathogenesis of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Antibodies to Sm are found in 30% of patients with SLE. Two antibodies, anti-dsDNA and anti-Sm, appear to occur only in SLE. Others occur in a variety of autoimmune and mixed connective tissue diseases. Antibody to Sm antigen was originally called Smith (Sm) antigen. Sm antigen has been reported a non-histone nuclear protein composed of various polypeptides of different molecular weight, which include the range of proteins 26KD, 27KD and 13KD. It has also been reported in a study of clinical significance, that the frequency of lung fibrosis and pericarditis was significantly higher in patients with anti-Sm (IgG, IgA and IgM).
