20th Eutelsat satellite order placed with Airbus Defence and Space
In July 2011, the major satellite operator Eutelsat selected Airbus Defence and Space to design and manufacture its Eutelsat 3B satellite.
From its 3° E location in geostationary orbit, Eutelsat 3B will operate 51 transponders in C-, Ku- and Ka-bands to provide video, data, telecoms and broadband services across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and parts of South America, notably Brazil.
The satellite’s 10 antennas will enable Eutelsat to provide fixed widebeams and steerable spotbeams to regional and national markets with maximum flexibility in the three frequency bands, as well as scalable allocation of power and spectrum per beam in Ka-band.
Based on Airbus Defence and Space’s highly reliable Eurostar E3000 platform, Eutelsat 3B will have a launch mass of six tones and electrical power of 12 kW. It is designed to deliver more than 15 years of in-orbit operation.
This order from Eutelsat follows on from the successful entry into commercial service of the Airbus Defence and Space-built KA-SAT – the first High-Throughput Satellite fully optimised for broadband access in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin.
