CIN agar was first described by Schiemann as an alternative to MacConkey Agar and other commonly used media for isolation of Yersinia enterocolitica, a causative agent of gasteroenteritis. CIN Agar has been found to be far superior to MacConkey, SS, CAL or Y agars. Fermentation of mannitol in the presence of neutral red results in a characteristic bulle-eye colonyss with red centers. Selective inhibition of gram-negitive & gram -positive organisms is obtained by means of crystal violet, sodium desoxycholate and the antimicrobial agents, cefsulodin, Irgasan & Novobiocin.
The Cefsulodin method has become popular for mesuring total coliforms and E.coli samples in water samples utilizing a membrane filtration detection technique1 .
