The C15 magnetic particle clutch is a torque-controlling device that couples input and output shafts when electrically excited, with torque proportional to coil current and independent of slip speed. It operates from 0.4 to 15 lb.-in. of torque, handles up to 1400 RPM, and dissipates a maximum of 20 watts continuously while keeping case temperature below 160°F. The clutch weighs 5 lbs. and has an output shaft inertia of 44 × 10⁻¶ lb.-in.-sec². Response times are 25 ms unforced and 14 ms forced. Rated coil voltages are 6, 12, 24, and 90 VDC, with corresponding resistances of 7.3, 28, 105, and 1370 Ω. Maximum overhung load is 35 lbs. The unit requires a flexible coupling, precise shaft alignment, and electrical grounding. Installation prohibits hammering, exposure to metal filings, or liquid ingress.
Placid magnetic particle clutches, also called magnetic powder clutches, provide a wide operating Torque Range. The torque is smooth and repeatable, thereby allowing for accurate control independent of the speed. The torque vs. current curve is nearly linear, making these clutches uniquely suited for tension control unwind/rewind applications, load simulation, torque limiting, and adjustable soft starts. Available in small and large sizes with torque ranging from 0.3 to 300 lb.-feet.
