Learning to fuse glass
Firing the MagicFuse requires skill. Because the kiln fires so rapidly, glass pieces should be limited in size to 2 layers of 1 ½” x 1 ½” or smaller. Larger sizes or additional layers of glass must be pre-heated for 5 minutes at a 50% power setting on the microwave. Otherwise the glass will break.
Annealing in a separate kiln is unnecessary for small glass pieces such as earrings and small pendants. The glass must also be free of glue, grease, and fingerprints. The rapid firing of these contaminants can cause the glass to break.
Firing times may vary even within the same microwave oven. The firing time varies from one microwave to the next, and a MagicFuse kiln that is still warm from a previous firing takes less time to fire than a cold kiln. For these reasons, don a pair of safety glasses and visually check the glass a minute or two before it is done. Then fire longer and check it again. Remove the MagicFuse kiln when the glass has fused just the way you had envisioned. The glass begins to fuse during the last 30 seconds of firing. This is why you should visually inspecting the glass to obtain precise fusing results.
