Microcide compound for broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi and are compatible with most formulations. Background: 5-bromo-5-nitro-1,3- dioxane, is an antimicrobial chemical compound which causes inhibition of enzyme activity in bacteria and is corrosive to metals. It is used in immunology for preserving antibodies and antisera in 0.1 - 0.5% concentration, and as a preservative to avoid use of sodium azide. Microcide I has a boiling point of approximately 210'C, meaning that some material can be lost during lyophilization. This property has both advantages and disadvantages: it allow the Microcide I to be present while the reagent is in the liquid form; it then can be removed by lyophilization. If the antimicrobial is needed again later in the liquid reagent after reconstitution, Microcide I can be incorporated into the reconstituting solution.
