A 1M 5-Y24 is a right-hand, double-threaded worm with 24 pitch, a pitch diameter of 0.500 inch, an outer diameter of 0.583 inch, a bore of 11/16 inch, a face width of 15/16 inch, and a hub projection of 0.37 inch. It is made of nylon and designed to mesh with 24-pitch worm gears at a 90-degree angle. The worm has a helix angle compatible with its mating gear and follows a 20° pressure angle. It is intended for use with mineral-filled nylon worm gears and is marked for discontinuation when stock is depleted.
A worm gear pair, or worm gear set, consists of two gears: the worm, which resembles a spiral screw, and the worm gear (aka, worm wheel).
For the pair to mesh, the worm and worm gear must have the same pressure angles, modules, and lead directions (left- or right-hand).
A worm revolves on a shaft that’s perpendicular to the worm gear and the shaft angle is typically 90°. Because the teeth gradually mesh as the worm rotates, there is low noise and low vibration.
