Crystalline quartz is frequently used for the stringiest quality retardation applications. Zero-order wave plates is made by cementing two quartz plate with their fast axes orthogonal to each other. The difference in thickness is equal to either ?/4 or ?/2 for a specified wavelength. Compared with multiple-order quartz retarders, they are much more insensitive to wavelength, temperature and angle of incidence. Wave plates of other wavelength and sizes are available for custom made.
