The Hylas 1 ‘Highly Adaptable Satellite’ for flexible response to fluctuating traffic demand is a Ka-/Ku-band geostationary multi-media/subscrip
tion HDTV satellite built by Airbus Defence and Space for the British broadband communications operator Avanti under a turnkey procurement contract. The satellite was launched by Ariane 5 from Kourou on 26 November 2010.
Airbus Defence and Space was prime contractor with responsibility for overall programme management and the design and build of the communications payload, while its Indian partner Antrix/ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) was responsible for the satellite bus (based on the I-2K model) and the spacecraft integration and test.
Hylas 1 is an innovative communications satellite providing interactive high definition television and interactive broadband services from its 33.5° W orbital position. It covers 22 countries in western and central Europe.
