DTH broadcast services and two-way broadband services
Astra 3B is a Ku- and Ka-band spacecraft designed for the transmission of both direct-to-home (DTH) broadcast services and two-way broadband services across Europe from 23.5° E, SES Astra’s third orbital hot spot.
After Astra 2B and Astra 1M, Astra 3B is the third Astra satellite to be built by Airbus Defence and Space. Prime contractor for Astra 3B, Airbus Defence and Space was responsible for the design and manufacture of the satellite, and the supplied of both the payload and the Eurostar E3000 platform. Launched on 21 May 2010 from Kourou on board an Ariane 5, Astra 3B operates up to 60 active transponders in Ku-band and four in Ka-band, with very high channel selectivity. The payload power is approximately 10kW and the launch mass 5,450kg. The satellite is specified for a minimum service life of 15 years.
