This course is designed to help you intuitively understand the factors involved in the safe, successful, and economical design and fabrication of welded products and structures. There are many parties involved in the production of weldments including: mechanical design engineers, metallurgical or materials engineers, welders, foremen, quality control and non-destructive examination (NDE) inspectors and in some cases jurisdictional regulators. This course will provide some perspective on each of those roles which will help you have productive discussions with any member of this cross-functional team, regardless of which role you are fulfilling. Also included is a set of downloadable one-sheet checklists covering a variety of topics that will help you ensure the daily success of your welding operations from design to fabrication to final inspection and acceptance. By participating in this course, you will learn how to successfully: Explain how an arc-welding machine generates the heat needed for welding and the necessary conditions to avoid weld defects. Identify common problems with welding processes and explain some troubleshooting concepts. Explain how welding affects various welded materials, including metallurgical and dimensional changes. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of various arc-welding processes. Describe basic weld design concepts, such as weld size determination and communication through weld and welding symbols on drawings.
