This course presents a qualitative comparison between electrical and hydraulic power transmission and control systems. The course discusses the benefits of merging both the electrical controls with the hydraulic drives in an Electro-hydraulic control system. The course presents several examples of how to convert the classical hydro-mechanical solutions into electro-hydraulic solutions. The core part of the course covers the construction and the principle of operation of the electrohydraulic valves including solenoid operated valves and proportional valves.

This course provides a fundamental understanding of construction and operating principles of the servo valves including flapper-nozzle and jet-pipe types. The course discusses several parameters for selecting an EH valve including static and dynamic valve performance. Students also compares the concepts of open loop versus closed loop to control position, speed, and load of hydraulic actuators. Basic functions that are contained by the electrical control units associated with these valves to improve the system performance such as gain adjustor, overload protection, null adjustment, ramp generator, dead-band eliminator, dither, and pulse width modulation are covered as well. The course concludes by presenting examples of electro-hydraulic control systems and some commissioning and maintenance guidelines for such systems.

Course attendees receive the textbook, Electro-Hydraulic Components and Systems, its accompanying workbook, a one-year free license to use the “Hydraulic Component Sizing Calculator” software, and free Animated Circuits Files.

  • Recognize the construction and the features of a proportional valve by symbols
  • Interpret the basic electronic schematics of the proportional/servo valve amplifiers.
  • Build an open or a closed loop position, speed, or load EH control system.
  • Tune an EH system to minimize the steady state error, overcome the shortcoming of overlapped EH valves, and control the acceleration and deceleration rate of a hydraulic actuators.
