Rather than modifying the existing surface of a material, polymerizable gases can be used to create a "new". Cross contamination is not an issue since the gases are continually refreshed and evacuated out of the process chamber. Applications for plasma cleaning include:

• Cleaning ceramic components used in medical devices
• Removal of organic contamination on metals or polymers
• Cleaning medical implantables prior to coating
• Capacitor cleaning or elimination of residual stamping oils on low-voltage switches
• Removing carbon residual after laser drilling
