3M™ Zirconium Diboride is a ceramic-based antioxidant used to improve corrosion resistance in zirconia-based, carbon-bonded refractories in contact with ferrous melts.
In refractory materials, carbon improves thermal shock resistance and protects against wetting from metals and slag. For example, the steel industry uses carbon-bonded bricks and other refractory components because this composition offers the best chemical resistance against molten steel. However, carbon is sensitive to oxidation, which occurs rapidly at temperatures above 1500ºC. Antioxidants are commonly used to protect carbon-containing components in order to extend service lifetimes. 3M™ Zirconium Diboride (ZrB2) is a ceramic-based antioxidant engineered to provide superior protection against very aggressive alloys. 3M zirconium diboride improves corrosion resistance in zirconia-based, carbon-bonded refractories that come into contact with ferrous melts. Applications include shroud tubes and submerged entry nozzles in steel production.
